Integrated Engineering, a world leading powerhouse in the contactless smart card industry, announced today that its contactless SmartID readers have been approved by the US General Services Administration (GSA) as compliant with the Federal Information Processing Standard 201 (FIPS 201). Integrated Engineering's readers are the first GSA PIV II Certified smart card readers included on the GSA Approved Products list for FIPS 201 compliant projects.
"We are very pleased to be the first company to receive the GSA FIPS 201 PIVII certification for contactless physical and logical smart card readers. With our GSA FIPS 201 certification, we enable federal customers to buy FIPS 201 compliant readers from our company," says Mr. JP Hulsker, Managing Director of Integrated Engineering. "We believe that the Approved Products List from GSA is a great resource and we believe in the importance of delivering compliant readers. This way the U.S. government can benefit from our knowledge and experience within the market."
Due to several events, the need for tighter logical and physical security controls has increased. Therefore, the White House issued Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) in August 2004. HSPD-12 sets out the goal of establishing a single government-wide credential that federal employees and contractors could use for access to physical and IT systems. FIPS 201 is a United States federal standard that specifies Personal Identity Verification (PIV) requirements for federal employees and contractors. Mandated by HSPD-12 all Federal Agencies must begin issuing FIPS 201 compliant PIVII cards by 27th October 2006.
